Meet Dr. Christine, Riedy, Principal Investigator for the Center for Integration of Primary Care and Oral Health

Dr. Christine Riedy, PhD, MPHChristine Riedy, PhD, MPH, has played an instrumental role in Harvard School of Dental Medicine’s efforts to be a champion of the integration of oral health and primary care. Riedy arrived at HSDM in 2013 and serves as the Delta Dental of Massachusetts Associate Professor in Oral Public Health and Epidemiology, as well as the department chair for Oral Health Policy and Epidemiology. On top of those distinctions, Riedy is a member of the Initiative to Integrate Oral Health and Medicine and the principal investigator for the Center for Integration of Primary Care and Oral Health (CIPCOH). CIPCOH was established in July 2016 through a cooperative agreement with the United States Department of Health and Human Services, Health Resources and Services Administration as one of six national centers supported by the Academic Units for Primary Care Training Enhancement (AU-PCTE) program. Riedy is also the principal investigator for the National Center for Equitable Care for Elders.... Welcoming Dr. John Ahern Back to HSDM

John Ahern, Integration FellowAfter spending six months as a Fulbright Scholar in HSDM’s Office of Global and Community Health in 2016, John Ahern, MD, DMD, MPH, PhD, has returned to Harvard School of Dental Medicine to work with the Initiative to Integrate Oral Health and Medicine. Ahern arrived in August and will serve as the Initiative’s Integration Fellow through the summer of 2020.

A native of Ireland, Ahern trained as both a dentist and a physician at Trinity College, the University of Dublin, and worked for several years as a clinician in both medical and dental roles. While working as a clinician, he earned a master’s degree in public health from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. Ahern gained further experience in the field of public health by working with the World Health Organization oral health program in Geneva, Switzerland.... Robin HarvanRobin Ann Harvan, EdD, EdM, FACE, FIAMSE, is currently a professor of Health Sciences, the director of the Health Sciences program, and co-chair of the Interprofessional Education Task Force at Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences University on the Boston campus. Harvan has been an academic affiliate with the Harvard School of Dental Medicine’s Initiative to Integrate Oral Health and Medicine since 2014.  Starting in 2016, Harvan has served as investigator and lead evaluator on the HRSA cooperative agreement with Harvard Medical School/Harvard School of Dental Medicine in partnership with University of Massachusetts Medical School, MCPHS University, and Stony Brook University School of Nursing to develop and operate an interinstitutional collaborative academic unit, the Center for Integration of Primary Care and Oral Health (CIPCOH)

Get to Know Dr. Hugh Silk, and How He’s Advancing Integration Through His Work with CIPCOH

Hugh Silk, MD, MPH, is currently a professor in the department of Family Medicine and Community Health at UMass Medical School, a position that he’s held since 2006. Silk is also a part-time lecturer at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine since 2015. He is a co-principal investigator for the Center for Integration of Oral Health and Medicine (CIPCOH). Silk also serves as the medical director at a primary care wellness center in western Massachusetts.

Hugh Silk, MD, MPHWhile Silk’s career has skewed toward the integration of oral health and primary care, this was not always the plan. After graduating from Harvard College in 1991, Silk went on to study medicine at McMaster University in Canada. He began his residency at UMass Memorial Medical Center Family Medicine in 1998, and it was there that he first began to notice the links between oral health and medicine. At the time, he observed many of his young patients suffering from poor oral health, most likely due to a lack of fluoridation in the local water supply. ... Dr. Alessandro Villa Explores Integration Through Oral Medicine and Oral Oncology

Dr. Alessandro Villa is an assistant professor of Oral Medicine in the Department of Oral Medicine, Infection, and Immunity at Harvard School of Dental Medicine, as well as an associate surgeon in the Division of Oral Medicine and Dentistry at Brigham and Women's HospitaVillal. Dr. Villa earned his DDS and PhD from Italy. He was a postdoctoral fellow at the National Cancer Institute in Maryland and later obtained his certificate in Oral Medicine from Harvard School of Dental Medicine and Brigham and Women's Hospital.... New Fellowship to Focus on the Integration of Oral Health and Oral Oncology

This past year, the Harvard School of Dental Medicine was awarded a grant from DentaQuest to support and introduce a new fellowship opportunity titled, “Fellowship in Oral Medicine and Oral Oncology.” The fellowship program aims to provide in-depth training for community dentists so that they are adequately prepared to manage cancer patients throughout the course of their cancer treatment and post-cancer therapy. The Initiative to Integrate Oral Health and Medicine Welcomes Dr. Sung Eun Choi

Harvard School of Dental Medicine and the Initiative to Integrate Oral Health and Medicine are excited to welcome Dr. Sung Eun Choi. Dr. Choi is originally from South Korea, and received her Bachelor of Science from Carnegie Mellon. She went on to receive a Master of Science in Biostatistics from Harvard University. Upon completing her master’s degree, she worked on simulation modeling and evaluating the impact of cancer control policy interventions at Massachusetts General Hospital.
